Green Beret 2023
21st November 2023
Our Scouts have just come back from the 39th Hertfordshire Scouts Green Beret competition. This is one of the high points of the Scouting year, and most of our outgoing Scouts say it's their best memory of their time with us. Scouts have to work in teams of 6 over a 14 hour period taking part in a series of physical and mental challenges / quizzes / games (Day Bases and Night Bases), an orienteering course and an assault course alongside other Scouts from Hertfordshire and beyond.
This year 148 teams took part in the competition and we entered 5 teams, from our senior Scouts to our very youngest. We are proud to say that we retained 2 trophies, achieving 3rd in the competition overall (our Green team) and 1st in the Night Bases (our Gold team) with some high rankings in orienteering (2nd) and on the assault course. In addition, we came 1st (Green) and 2nd (Gold) in Harpenden & Wheathampstead District so we retained the District Trophy too.
The Scouts made us all proud and showed resilience, tenacity and team spirit in wet and muddy conditions, keeping going from 8.30am until around 11pm.
Thank you also to our leaders who gave up their time to run a smooth camp - Dickson Tam, Grant Denny, James Bingham, Jane Thomas, Konrad Caulkett, Mark Wilson, Sally Rees, Steve Clark and Stuart Roberts. A special thank you to Rachel Pepperrell as Camp Leader and to Grant Denny for pre-camp planning, this was by far the largest weekend Scout camp the 1st have attempted and a huge achievement for the Scouts and Leaders alike.
